Guidelines for volunteers

Please read ALL of this page as our workflow has changed this year to register as a volunteer.

Thank you for your interest in volunteering for this year’s BookBuster used curriculum sale.

Each year HERI hosts one of the largest used home school curriculum sale in NE Florida! Massive amounts of wonderful curriculum can be purchased at very low prices. (The sale also offers many readers, games, and reference books.)

Location, Date, & Time

BookBuster is being held at Hillcrest Baptist Church (7673 Collins Road, Jacksonville, FL 32244).

Date: Saturday, July TBA (event) and/or Friday, July TBA (set-up)

Time options to volunteer: Friday, July ?? 9AM-1PM, 11AM-3PM or 9AM-4PM (or until sale is set up) **PLEASE NOTE, LUNCH IS PROVIDED (for 9AM-4PM volunteers)

Saturday, July ?? 8AM-12 PM, 12PM-4PM or 8AM -4 PM. **PLEASE NOTE, LUNCH IS PROVIDED (for 8AM-4PM volunteers)

Requirements & Activities Involved:

o You must be a HERI member.

o You must be able to work at least one shift.

Volunteer activities primarily consist of:

o Carrying and sorting books by category and grade level

o Assisting with setup/take down of tables

o Helping shoppers and sellers with carrying or moving their books

o Most responsibilities will require walking and bending

Please wear comfortable, but modest clothing.  This is a work day so wear work clothes that you can bend and move around in and don’t mind getting dirty.  Wear comfortable shoes as you will be moving all day.

 

We Would Appreciate If You Bring…

If you have wagons, crates on wheels or dollies you can bring, these items will be a big help in moving books from the floor to the tables, and in assisting sellers to their cars. Please mark or label your cart/dolly so it does not get confused with someone else’s. 

We also ask for volunteers to bring boxes for our sale. Printer boxes are great, but other strong boxes from big box stores work great also.  We use these boxes to organize books on tables. It is not required to bring boxes, but it helps us get a quick start.   (If you are collecting boxes, let us know as we usually spend a week or two prior to the sale on a box hunt).

 

Food & Drinks

HERI will provide waters both days. For those who volunteer lunch will be provided. (Friday’s lunch is Chick-fil-A sandwich and Saturday’s lunch is ???.) If you are in need of a special diet, please bring your own lunch.

NOTE for teen and children volunteers: 

CHILDREN & TEENAGERS WILL BE ALLOWED TO VOLUNTEER WITH YOU —IF THEY ARE RESPONSIBLE AND ARE SUPERVISED BY THEIR PARENT/GUARDIAN.

  • At least one parent must volunteer with minors.
  • Anyone can receive a letter for community service hours worked during BookBuster.
  • Parents / guardians should email HERI in advance of the sale so we can have his/her volunteer hours paperwork.
  • Please email herijax@yahoo.com with children and age that you plan on having help with you.

No childcare is provided. Volunteer selections are normally made on a first come first serve basis and you will receive an email or verbal confirmation as you are added to the volunteer list.

BONUS FOR VOLUNTEERING

To reward volunteers for your time and effort in serving HERI, you will be allowed to shop for your own personal books after the set-up is complete on Friday – at approximately 4 pm. Yes, you will have first pick of the wonderful items.           

Cash, credit and debit cards accepted.

As HERI is a volunteer run organization, we thank you for your willingness to serve HERI and our local home education community!

H.E.R.I. is a VOLUNTEER organization. The quantity and quality of services or events provided is in direct proportion to the response and availability of members who volunteer.
