HOW TO HOMESCHOOL

You have 2 legal options to choose from when you begin your home-education program;
Registering with your local School Board or joining a Non-Traditional Private School

Registering with the School Board (Duval County)
1. Click on the link below to visit the Duval County website and print the Home Education Program Guidelines and Procedure Packet.  Other counties have a link on their website in order for you to download the guidelines and letter of intent.
http://www.duvalschools.org/static/students/services/home_education.asp
The county no longer mails out the guidelines.
Student Services - 4th Floor
Duval County School Board
1701 Prudential Drive
Jacksonville, FL 32207
390-2000 or 390-2081.

2. Complete the Notification of Intent and return to the School Board within 30 days of beginning your home school program.

Or joining a Non-Traditional Private School
1.  Non-Traditional Private Schools (once called Home based private schools or 600/700 schools) are similar to support groups except that they also cover home schoolers legally. Before the enactment of the Home Education Act of 1985 (Florida Statute 232.02(3)), families desiring to teach their children at home often incorporated to form home-based private schools under Florida Statutes 623 or 617 in order to legally cover themselves while homeschooling. With the Home Education Act (Florida Statute 232.02(3)), many new families chose to home school under the new law. The most common reasons for joining a 623 or 617 school are 1) increased support and accountability and 2) personal and religious convictions concerning submission of parental authority to the government.   You can find a list of these under 'Resources' in the main menu.

No matter which you choose all home-educators must;
1.   You must maintain a portfolio on each child consisting of a log of daily work, samples of child’s work, and list of reading materials used. Portfolios must be kept for 2 years and made available for inspection by the School Board Superintendent upon a 15 day written notice.

2. An annual evaluation of the child’s progress must be made and a copy of the results filed with the School Board by August 1st. H.E.R.I. provides group testing for its members for this purpose, however this is one of 5 options for evaluation - all options are included in the guidelines. If you are interested in an alternate evaluation, a Teacher Referral List is available in the Library.

3. If you discontinue your home education program or move out of Duval County, you must submit a notification of termination to the School Board within 30 days of termination.

6. For complete guidelines go to www.fpea.com and read The Guide to Homeschooling in Florida

Just a Reminder:
"Your Six Responsibilities"

4. Submit an annual evaluation for each child to the district school superintendent.
5. Preserve your child's portfolio for two years.
6.  Submit a letter of termination upon completion of you home-education program, upon enrollment in a public or private school, or upon moving from the county.
